Brexit would “drive a wedge” between London and the rest of the UK as more Europeans live, study and work here than in any other part of the country, a report said today.
The Centre for London think tank said the capital was “more closely linked” with continental Europe than ever before, with 850,000 EU nationals calling it home.
It warned that with over 600,000 employed in London, any visa regulation following a pull-out would deal a major blow to the capital’s economy.
The study said the capital was more in favour of remaining in the EU than any other part of the UK. It comes after a poll for the Evening Standard found London divides by 57 per cent to 43 per cent against a British exit .
The paper, Continental Capital, also set out close links in studying, travel and trade. It concluded: “London already trades on a global stage, and would bounce back from Brexit. But leaving the EU would change the capital’s character, fly in the face of its citizens’ preferences, and drive a wedge between London and the rest of the UK.”
