With Boyega taking on the lead role in the new film, it is unclear whether or not Elba and the rest of the orginal cast will be returning for the sequel.
While Del Toro has stepped down from his role as director, he will still be on board as a director alongside Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni.
Boyega was a relative unknown when he was cast alongside Daisy Ridley in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
He is also lined up to star in James Ponsoldt’s The Circle alongside Emma Watson and Tom Hanks.
